HP Media Center PC m7640n and Service Pack 3 (SP3) May 13, 2008

Do you receive the following error message?

A problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer…

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0×0000007E (0xC0000005, 0xFC5CCAF3, 0xFC90F8C0, 0xFC90F5C0) SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

I will provide you the steps to resolve the issue.

1. Restart your computer in Safe Mode:

a. Manually power off the PC by pressing and holding the power button until the PC shuts down

b. Press the power button to start the PC and boot into Safe Mode (F 8)

c. At the HP or Compaq logo screen press the F8 key once per second until the Windows Advance Options Menu appears

d. Using the UP arrow key, highlight Safe Mode (at the top of list) e. With Safe Mode highlighted, press the “Enter” key

f. Press “Enter” again if the PC stops at the OS selection screen and the PC will reboot

2. Once the PC has booted to the Safe Mode Desktop, click on “Yes” to acknowledge the “Windows is running in safe mode” advisory window

3. Browse and rename the file:

a. Right click on the Start button, left click on Explore b. Browse to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers

c. Rename “intelppm.sys” to “XXXintelppm.syx”

d. Verify the file was renamed successfully

4. Close Explorer and reboot the PC

5. The PC should reboot to the Windows XP Desktop
